2-1-1/LIFE LINE Celebrates National 2-1-1 Day

Press Releases ON Feb 10, 2012

Rochester, N.Y. (February 10, 2012) – 2-1-1/LIFE LINE, the information and referral service and crisis center operated by Goodwill of the Finger Lakes, will join in with 2-1-1 providers throughout the United States to celebrate National 2-1-1 Day on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Additionally on that day, 2-1-1/LIFE LINE will also commemorate its seventh anniversary as a 2-1-1 service provider and its 39th year of service to the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes communities.

“On February 11, we want to take a moment to remind people throughout the Finger Lakes that when they don’t know where to turn for help, there is a simple number they can call,” says Shye Louis, 2-1-1/LIFE LINE manager. “While 2-1-1 receives hundreds of calls each day, we know there are people who need help but don’t know where to turn. By calling 2-1-1, people are able to find that help easier than ever before.”

2-1-1/LIFE LINE is the region’s one-stop service for vital information and referral. According to Louis, staff members are working every day to connect individuals who call to the critical health and human services they need.

“In the last year alone, 2-1-1/LIFE LINE handled over 120,000 contacts via telephone, live chat, TTY and email from people in the community seeking help,” says Louis.

2-1-1/LIFE LINE Operations Supervisor Sherika Hall notes that there is no “typical” day when it comes to caller’s needs.

“We have to be prepared with information about the incredible range of services that are available, as well as be prepared to assist people in crisis to stay safe and get connected to the help they need,” says Hall.

Callers to 2-1-1/LIFE LINE can access information about services that assist with food, shelter, mental health, addictions, family support and much more. The service maintains an extensive database of community resources that is updated on a regular basis to ensure accuracy. A publicly accessible version of the database is available online at www.211FingerLakes.org. Additionally, an option to chat live via instant message with a 2-1-1/LIFE LINE counselor is available through the website.
